Guangzhou, China

Early this month I had the chance to visit China, not one of the main cities but Guangzhou which is the capital of Guangdong. it is also known historically as Canton or Kwangchow,is the capital and largest city of the GuangDong province. Located in southern China on the Pearl River, about 120 km (75 mi) north-northwest of Hong Kong, Guangzhou is a key national transportation hub and trading port. Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and southern China’s largest city. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12.78 million.

The reason for me being here is due to my office advertising department had their team building seminar here. Since its a foreign land, I always never fail to explore the city and take pictures. Guangzhou is also bustling city that is constantly growing. The Pearl River is one main gateways for import and export trading happens between China and the world. One of the sights we visited was the Four Ram statue, shopping/ pedestrian street which are shopping havens. Anyway here are some shots I took there :

Save Jalan Sultan ! ! !

Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, is an urban place where many old buildings exist in the midst new development. One such street is called Jalan Sultan ,which is home to some amazing colonial buildings and also many business. Recently the government has asked the people in this area to evacuate for the development of a MRT project. Hence there was an event to create awareness of sustaining an important area in Kuala Lumpur.

A bit bout the project from their official FACEBOOK page :

“Pre-war shoplots on Jalan Petaling & Jalan Sultan, some of which are more than a century old, are at risk of being demolished to make way for an underground MRT line. Acquisition notices were also served to business owners, which came as a shock because there was no prior consultation or correspondence from the government. As a result, a famous Malaysian tourist landmark known all over the world is now in danger of having its landscape changed forever.

Most of us here have been here for decades, some close to a century even. Generation after generation, we have toiled, worked and preserved this place and made it into what it is today. Soon, Yook Woo Hin where KL residents will fondly remember stopping by for a ‘pau’ or Chinese steamed bun on the way to school, Kwong Fook Wing the tailor who made coats for many notable dignitaries and the quaint and rustic Lok Ann Hotel which has been in business since 1957 will be no more.

We are not against development, in fact the MRT line will make it even easier for foreign tourists and Malaysians alike to visit Jalan Petaling & Jalan Sultan. We are however against the arbitrary acquisition of the property where we’ve been operating our businesses in for years. The line runs underground anyway so we do not see why the acquisition exercise is even required in the first place. We just want to make a living here in this place we quite literally call home.

Please help support our cause to raise awareness about our plight! “

Anyway here are some pictures that I took during that night :

Well, I hope that the country will know the importance of sustaining old building to ensure peace and harmony among the people in the area.

Incredible India – Jaipur (Part 1)

In continuation from my previous posting, my India trip was amazing. I also went to Jaipur, a city where the architecture is simply amazing.

Well Jaipur (Rajasthani: जैपर Hindi: जयपुर) [ˈdʒəjpʊɾ] ( listen), also popularly known as the Pink City, is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, the city today has a population of more than 3.1 million.

The very structure of Jaipur resembles the taste of the Rajputs and the Royal families. At present, Jaipur is a major business centre with all requisites of a metropolitan city. The city is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets which are laid out into six sectors separated by broad streets 111 ft (34 m) wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east.

The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex, (Hawa Mahal), formal gardens, and a small lake. Nahargarh Fort, which was the residence of the King Sawai Jai Singh II, crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. The observatory, Jantar Mantar, is one of the World Heritage Sites.[1] Jaipur is a popular tourist destination in Rajasthan and India.Excerpt from Wikipedia.

Incredible India – New Delhi (Part 1)

Last month I had the chance to finally go to one the country that I always wanted to visit. India, is one the biggest countries in the Asian continent. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; the People’s Republic of China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.

India is one place where cultures, language, customs and color are plentiful. My journey was to the northern part of India. I visited three places which was Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. This is the shots I took when I was in Delhi :

Wesak Day @ Brickfields, KL

Vesākha (Pali; Sanskrit: Vaiśākha वैशाख) is an annual holiday observed traditionally by Buddhists in the Indian subcontinent, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the South East Asian countries of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and Indonesia.

Sometimes informally called “Buddha’s Birthday”, it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment (nirvāna), and passing away (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha.

The exact date of Vesākha varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on the full moon Uposatha day (typically the 5th or 6th lunar month). Vesākha Day in China is on the eighth of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but falls in April or May. The pictures are taken during the Wesak Day celebration at Brickfields, Maha Vihara Temple in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

Jakarta in Hipstamatic

Earlier this month, I was in Jakarta. Went for the Java Jazz Festival (post will be up soon). I love Jakarta so much, the people and the atmosphere is simply splendid. I was there almost 9 nine full days and I had the chance of seeing Jakarta from a different lite, my good friend brought me around the city on his motorcycle. This is something I always wanted to do…using the amazing Hipstamatic app on the iPhone 3Gs, I managed to capture some shots.

Before that a brief history on Jakarta :

Jakarta (English pronunciation: /dʒəˈkɑrtə/ formerly Batavia and officially the Special Capital Territory of Jakarta), is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Located on the northwest coast of Java, it has an area of 661 square kilometres (255 sq mi) and a 2010 census count population of 9,580,000. Jakarta is the country’s economic, cultural and political centre. It is the most populous city in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia, and is the tenth-largest city in the world. The urban area, Jabodetabek, is the second largest in the world. Jakarta is listed as a global city in the 2008 Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC) research.

The city’s name is derived from the Old Javanese word “Jayakarta” which translates as “victorious deed”, “complete act”, or “complete victory”. Established in the fourth century, the city became an important trading port for the Kingdom of Sunda. It grew as the capital of the colonial Dutch East Indies. It was made capital of Indonesia when the country became independent after World War II. It was formerly known as Sunda Kelapa (397–1527), Jayakarta (1527–1619), Batavia (1619–1942), and Djakarta (1942–1972). Jakarta has also been known as the Big Durian by most Indonesians and some foreigners.

Landmarks include the National Monument and Istiqlal Mosque. The city is the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat. Jakarta is served by the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport, and Tanjung Priok Harbour; it is connected by several intercity and commuter railways, and served by several bus lines running on reserved busways.
