Splashing Weekend

Last Saturday was indeed an awesome time for me. Together with the kids from Everyone Has Hope project we went to the Jungle Lodge Alang Sedayu near Gombak. The kids were joined with other Burmese children around KL. It was an amazing time hanging out with them.

Of Holidays in Kelantan to A Rocker Chick !

Holla people, yes it’s been a few weeks since I last blogged and I am so used to start my postings in this same exact manner. But at times it’s kinda OK to just relax and take your time to write about things that happened in your life. Well, I was in the east coast side of Malaysia last week.

The state of Kelantan is where girlfriend grew up in, so I decided to make a trip to see the place and also to see her family as well. Kelantan is just full of colors and lots of interesting sights and sounds that one can experience when you are there. I had a lot of things to photography and one of the cool things I saw was the art of Keris making.

The Keris is a traditional weapon used by the Malays for hundreds of years. So when I visited the Kelatan craft centre, there was a Keris maker and I was privileged to take some shots of him and do a short photo story on him. Here are some pictures from the set :

Steve McCurry in Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA

Yup that is right, the man himself was here in Kuala Lumpur and indeed it was a good experience of him sharing his thoughts on photography and challenges he faced till now as a photographer.

A small write up on McCurry from Wikipedia states this :

McCurry began studying film history cinematography and filmmaking at Penn State in 1968, but ended up getting a degree in theater arts and graduating cum laude in 1974. He became very interested in photography when he started taking pictures for the Penn State newspaper called The Daily Collegian.

His photojournalism career began with his coverage of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. McCurry disguised himself in native dress and hid his film by sewing it into his clothes. His images were among the first of the conflict and were widely published. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad.

McCurry’s most recognized photo is that of “Afghan Girl,” a previously unidentified Afghan refugee. The image itself was named as “the most recognized photograph” in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the “Afghan Girl” remained unknown for over 15 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.

When I asked him on the topic of culture and how he perceives culture, he said that photography has always been a way of him trying to show the world of the things that he adore and wants others to experience from his travels. The human emotions are the main gist of his photography usually and he adds by saying that he usually carries up to 5 lenses but only sticks with a 24mm wide angle lens for all the pictures that he take.

Thus, seeing this man really inspired me and to listen from him on photography. And he is also one of the renowned photographers who is attached with Magnum Photos and this agency was started by the best in the world, people like Robert Capa and Henri Cartier Bresson also to greats like David Seymour.

So, people who dont know about him and his pictures, please do check out his pictrues at his website. Besides here are the two out of 6 pictures that I took of him during the talk at the Annexe Gallery:

Street Photography Update ver 2.0

Photography has been really something that I have been looking at for the past few years as a way of expressing myself in a creative way. After graduating with a degree in Film & TV, working in the industry for almost one and half years has made to look at the Film & TV medium in a different light and then I switched to photography, I have been working on a few projects now and also this year there are some more wedding jobs that are coming in for me. I hope that it would be fruitful…

I also have been reading a lot on street photography and also meeting people like Vig from KL Flickr has made me realize that things around you are the best subjects to be photographed, and I am looking at things in a different way. Simplicity, uniqueness and message behind the photograph is what I am looking when I shoot on the streets nowadays. There are so many ways of doing street photography, the best part is there is no Right or Wrong in executing a photograph thus making it very subjective to the photographer, also have a look at THIS  for more information on street photography . Anyway these some shots that I took when I was out with Vig around KL :
